The ESE Self-contained class at Dr. N. E. Roberts Elementary consists of children who have been designated with a variety of disabled, a certified special education teacher and  paraprofessional.

To be identified a student must be presented before the building's Intervention Assistance Team (I.A.T.). The team is comprised of a Special Education teacher, a regular education teacher, a representative for the district, and the child's parent/guardian. Prior to the meeting, the psychologist, speech/hearing therapist, etc. may have been asked to evaluate the student and present their findings during the meeting. If, after reviewing all relevant information regarding the child's academic growth and development, the team identifies a disability; an Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) will be developed during the meeting and signed by each participant. The I.E.P. is a legal contract between the parent/guardian and the school district that documents the student's educational plan for a period of time.

It is the responsibility of the special education teacher, with the assistance of the paraprofessional, to present those learning experiences that will address the goals written in the I.E.P. Since the chronological age of the children may be between six and twelve years of age, the children will be placed into instructional groups. With modifications, a special emphasis on self-concept and through positive reinforcement strategies, many of the content areas found in the mainstream classroom will be presented to the children in the ESE classroom.

The ESE classroom is one of the many places at Dr. N. E. Roberts Elementary where learning takes place.
