Lakeland Highlands Middle School was established in 1975 and is located in Southwest Lakeland just off South Florida Avenue. The school is an A+ school that incorporates a modified block schedule servicing students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Students are scheduled into eight total classes. Odd periods meet on Silver days, while even periods meet on Gold days.
In 2012, LHMS became a pre-academy with tracks available in fine arts, aviation, law, medicine, media design, culinary arts, and STEAM. Read more about the PALMS Academy.
On Monday, January 27th Workforce Education will open
the application for pre-academies for the 2014-15 school year. Current 6th
and 7th graders will be signing up in their Social Science classes
January 27 - 31. Guidance counselors will be there to assist
students in applying for their pre-academy.
During this time, counselors will review the different pre-academies offered at LHMS and will walk the students through the process of enrolling. Students will apply for their pre-academy during this meeting.
If you would prefer to apply for your student’s pre-academy, you may apply online by logging into polkacademies.com and completing the application with your student starting January 27th prior to the student meeting with the guidance counselor in their Social Science class.
If your student is not present in their Social Science class on the day the counselor visits, you may apply with them at polkacademies.com or your student may contact their grade level counselor for assistance.

Congrats! Math Counts
The LHMS Math Counts team took 1st place overall in the team competition! They also took 1st in the Ciphering Round - a speed round where each team member competed to answer quickly and were awarded points for speed and accuracy. The team received the award for Most Improved School, Manning Chen won "best 6th grader" And 3 of our team members scored in the top 10 of 155 competitors: Bryce Shi, AJ Manning, Manning Chen

The LHMS Band had a fantastic turn out at this year's Solo & Ensemble Festival. Over 80 students participated in solos and small group performances, earning the following ratings: 32 Superiors, 20 Excellents, and 4 Goods. CONGRATULATIONS to Ms. Hansen and the LHMS Band.
For the second year in a row, LHMS’ Cougars’ Tale yearbook has been selected to be a Balfour (Taylor Yearbooks) National Sample. Sample yearbooks are used as resources by advisors, students and publishing company representatives across the country.

Polk County Public Schools has the ability to create accounts for all students to allow for collaborative sharing using Google Apps for Education. These accounts will be used for school related projects. However, no student will be assigned an account without parent or guardian approval. The rules governing proper electronic communications by students are included in the Technology Acceptable Use Policy that is part of the Student Code of Conduct.
