School Media Center

Media Specialist: Kirsten Akers

Bethune Academy’s Media Center houses over 7,000 books that are available for checkout. Many of these books are a part of BA’s Accelerated Reader program. In addition to each class coming to the library weekly, the Media Center is open Monday - Friday from 7:45-8:20 for students to read, check out new books, take AR quizzes, do research, or browse some of our reference books and magazines. Nine computers are available for student and parent use. Each one is connected to the internet and to a printer. Please come by and “check us out”!

Accelerated Reader Quizzes

AR Book FinderBethune Academy has a strong Accelerated Reader (AR) Program. It is used in second through fifth grades. First graders will be part of the program after the first semester. Each child is tested in STAR, a program that gives us a reading range for him/her. Each student is then assigned a reading range color at our school that corresponds to the results of the STAR test. When the students come to the library, they check out books with that color marked on them. After the student has finished reading the book, he/she takes a short quiz about that book. The quiz is usually only five to ten questions long. It consists of very literal questions and is presented on the computer in the form of multiple choice questions. The quiz may be taken in their regular classroom, computer lab, or the Media Center. The student may not look back at the story once the quiz has started. Points are awarded for correct answers. Students are rewarded each grading period for meeting their grade level goal.
