First Grade
First grade is an important learning milestone for young students. They are curious about their world and learn mainly through hands on activities, manipulatives, music/movement activities and technology (Smart Board, Smart Responders, etc.).
In Reading, students will learn how to blend words together that will help them become more fluent readers. They will also learn strategies on how to understand what they are reading by figuring out the main idea and details of the story they read.
Students will explore the world of numbers in Math by being presented with real world situations. They will learn numbers to 100; skip counting by 2's, 5's. and 10's; and how to add and subtract one and two digits numbers.
Science will bring their senses alive when they are introduced to life cycles of plants and animals; how matter (solids, liquids, and gases) are all around us, and the many ways objects move.
First grade writing includes how neatly students write and and the proper use of capitals and punctuation. By the end of the year, students will also learn how to write a paragraph of at least six sentences to include a topic sentence, the main idea, and details about the topic..We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning!
