In Memory of King Smith

King Smith

The administration, faculty, staff, and students would like to take this opportunity to say goodbye to a valued member of the Frostproof community.  On April 15th, we lost King Smith.  He was the facilities manager for the Polk County School Board.  For the past five seasons, King was the Bulldogs’ head softball coach and assistant coach for softball and soccer for the previous nine seasons. King's peers recently paid him the utmost compliment when they selected him as the Florida Athletic Coaches Association District 13 Class 4A Coach of the Year.  Frostproof was scheduled to open its district tournament against Mulberry, but instead decided to forfeit the game out of respect for Smith.
King Smith was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Frostproof and a veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was an exceptional father, very active in youth sports in Frostproof for many years and was a retired race car driver.   His daughter, Chelle, graduated from Frostproof Middle Senior High School in 2011.
"He was a great man. He was my sounding board and he kept me level-headed," Frostproof girls soccer head coach George Wrye told The Ledger. "I can't imagine Frostproof without King Smith. What he has meant to the community as far as coaching and taking care of the facilities. He coached Little League baseball and softball and soccer.  It's a tremendous loss for the whole community and not just the school. He's done it all. You name it and he's done it."  King Smith will be missed.
