How is Gause similar to other Polk County Schools?

  • Regular middle/ senior High School (grades 6 - 12)
  • Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
  • All students are required to take the same academic courses necessary for full graduation
  • 24 credits to graduate
  • Same code of conduct as all other Polk County Schools, same rules, same consequences
  • Dress Code, but no uniforms
  • Students earn a regular High School Diploma

How is Gause Academy different from other Polk County Schools?

Gause is a School of Choice – one’s choice to apply to get on waiting list, to reply to invitation, to register, and to stay or not. It is also Gause’s choice to withdraw invitation should student violate contract.

Specialized Vocational Curriculum

  • School of Manufacturing and Industry: Construction, Transportation, and Medical Service
  • School of Communications and Service: Business, Computer Repair, Graphics, Hospitality & Tourism
  • Middle School Career Wheel - this is where all middle school grade students are exposed to all of the above vocational areas for one semester each. Students are expected to find their likes and dislikes, there strong and weak skills. And, in the ninth grade they are then asked to pick and choose an area(s) of specialty.

Smaller School Environment = 320 students max

  • Smaller classes = 15 - 20 students per class
  • More individual student teaching and involvement.
  • Initial evaluation and remediation of needs.

Specialized Population - Students with average to above average IQ, who for one reason or another has fallen behind in their academic career. Could mean behind a grade level or just a few more recent poor grades. The important focuses are students who should be but are not, performing adequately academically in their home school environment. This is not a school of discipline. Extremely disruptive students are not even invited to Gause and those that are invited but continuously disrupt are asked to leave.

Zero Tolerance for Fighting - SRO automatically charges students with Disruption to Educational Process or Assault & Battery - hand cuffed - AUTOMATICALLY SUSPENDED.

It is far too dangerous for such disruptive activity due to vocational equipment that could readily become weapons!

High School Electives (beyond vocational classes)

  • ROTC, TV Media Production, Drama, OJT and Art.

High School Sports

  • Participation at regularly zoned school.

Buses

  • We have our own set of buses that transport our students from Mulberry, Ft. Meade, Bartow (up to the Bartow air base), Highland City, Lakeland as far north as beyond Rockridge Rd. and east to Dixie highway.
