Activities

Chess Club

Students in grades 1 - 5 learn to play Chess and compete against each other and other schools in Polk County. Mrs. C. Jones is the advisor. Our Chess Team members learn about using strategy and critical thinking as part of the game play. They also practice problem solving skills as they try to predict their opponent's next move. The skills they learn in Chess will help them to remain life long learners, just like our Griffin Mission Statement says! Chess Team had a terrific season last year, and we are looking forward to them earning more trophies this year. Our team practices on Wednesdays from 3:00 - 4:15.

K Kids Club:

Sponsored by our North Lakeland Kiwanis, K Kids learn about community service by participating in activities on and off campus. The club meets on Mondays after school for all grade levels. They do various community service projects like the Math-A-Thon in support of St Jude's Hosptial. Mrs. Fallin is the advisor.

Griffin Pride Team:

Students work with Ms. Sherman, our Guidance Counselor, in helping others in our community. The Pride Team goes to a training to learn about service. They help around campus during Parent Nights and lead our school in activities like Red Ribbon Week. Pride Team members are 5th grade students who have shown an interest in serving others.

Safety Patrols:

Select 4th and 5th grade students are selected to help ensure campus safety. They are led by Mrs. Sorrell,  who trains them to be campus leaders. Safety patrols escort younger students to class and are on patrol during dismissal to help students get to their buses and vans on time.

Shutter Bugs Photography Club:
Students in grades 1 - 5 can be part of the brand new digital photography club named Shutter Bugs. They will learn how to frame, shoot, download, and crop digital pictures. There is a limited number of students who can be involved in this club. It meets on Fridays from 2:45 - 3:30. Students will be selected on a first come, first served basis. Club advisor is Mrs. Yearicks, assisted by Mrs. Cardenas. Last club day for the school year is Friday, December 12th.
We want to thank all of our Parents for their support, and we'll be back next year!
S.E.N. News Crew:
Selected students in grades 1 - 5 audition, plan, write, film, and edit the daily news show. There are also special projects including a Music and Comedy Video, and a Stop Animation project students will be working on during meeting times. News Crew meets Monday to Friday at 7:45am - 8:30am in the Production Room. Additional Thursday classes are from 2:45 - 3:15. Mrs. Yearicks is director.
