Welcome to Our Website
Jean O'Dell Learning Center, a Polk County School District Title 1 school, offers specialized classes from Kindergarten through 12th grade and beyond. Students who graduate may continue through age 21 in order to work on transition and daily living skills. We are located at 1310 S. Floral Ave., approximately 1 mile south of Main St., in Bartow, Fl. and 1/2 mile north of the Board of Education offices.

Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Year – Alice Slater
“Miss Alice” has a busy schedule with friends, family, shuffleboard tournaments and travel. But every Tuesday and Thursday morning, she bustles into our library to read with our students with special needs. Ms. Slater, a recent widow, selects appropriate stories for our big and little guys and has a special place reserved for her in our library’s reading corner. When not reading, she helps students with assignments. She was invaluable for her help in editing one student’s composition about Special Olympics, which eventually ended up as a book on our shelves. She has become part of our learning community, supporting us by her attendance at school events such as our Family Fun Day and Pastries for Parents. Our students enjoy performing for and being cheered on by our favorite great-grandmother, Miss Alice.
Miss Alice knows the importance of reading. At 86 years young, she has three grown “boys”, two of whom who had reading problems while in school. When asked why she continues to come back to such an unpredictable environment, she said, “Because I just love reading to kids, and I think what I’m doing is sinking in.” The feeling is mutual, Miss Alice. We just love having you read to our kids!
Ms. Slater will be recognized, along with volunteers from all district schools, at a Volunteer Recognition Breakfast on May 2.
