Shipp is proud to be a part of Winter Haven’s Centennial Celebration.
Established in 1956, we’re located in southeast Winter Haven off of 540
(Winter Lake Road) on Camellia Dr.
Where did Lake Shipp get its name? Shipp Lake located north of us is why our school has its name, but where did the name Shipp come from? There are about seven readily identifiable groups of people that named lakes in Polk County according to the Polk County Historical and Genealogical Library. One of those groups was government surveyors who established first townships and range lines in Polk County. John Westcott was one of these surveyors that came to this area in 1849. Westcott lived in Madison County Florida. His family was very influential in politics and helped him get a job as head of a surveyor team sent to this area. Maps of this area were very inaccurate and land impossible to sell. Westcott’s survey changed all of that.
Westcott brought several men from Madison to help him accomplish this
job. William Shipp was one of those men. William Shipp chose one of the
lakes to bear his name. Much is written about Westcott because he was a
surveyor general. Not much is known about the Shipp family.
