Accelerated Reader FAQ
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading incentive program to
provide students with reading comprehension practice every
time they read a book. Students read a book and take a quiz
based on that book. The AR program allows students to work
and read at their own reading ability level. As students
read more, their comprehension improves, thus improving
their reading ability. AR quizzes provide instant feedback
to students, thus building upon their confidence as a better
reader.
STAR Test
LMC Teachers will use the STAR Reading test to gauge each
student's Reading Ability Level. Setting goals within these
reading levels provides an attainable challenge for students to
gain better competency in their reading skill. It is recommended
students to read books within his/her range to help build
confidence in their reading ability through successful
completion of AR quizzes.
What can Accelerated Reader do to help my child?
The Accelerated Reader program allows students to read at
their own pace, at their own ability level, thus building their
reading skills.
This will promote a love of reading for pleasure and
enjoyment. Through the AR quizzes, he/she will gain success as a
reader that will lead to a desire to read more often. The
overall goal is to improve your child's classroom grades and
FCAT Reading Scores, and ultimately create lifelong learners.
What can I as a parent do to help my child succeed in
reading?
The more children read, improvement in all academic areas
will follow. Here are some tips you can do at home to help your
child become better readers at home and school:
- Have a family member (sibling, parent, grandparent) read
TO your child every night.
- Have a family member (sibling, parent, grandparent) read
WITH your child every night.
- Encourage your child to read INDEPENDENTLY every night.
- Turn on closed captioning on the television. Eyes are
drawn to read the captioning that is going along with the
picture on the screen.
- Have your child read a cereal box, or other food
packaging, at the table when eating breakfast.
