Garden Club Happenings

Florida Learn and Serve Project

This year our fifth graders have been involved in a Florida Learn and Service Project.  It is called Medulla Schoolyard Nursery.  They have been learning about Florida Native Plants.  After the classroom instruction, they have propagated plants from cuttings and seeds.

We have a greenhouse with a misting system to facilitate rooting the cuttings.  Once they begin to root, the plants are moved outside to continue to grow until transplanted into larger containers.

The students will be taking a field trip to the Circle Bar B Preserve to plant these Florida native plants and some more mature ones that we have purchased.

We are in the process of editing a book that the students have created on Florida Native Plants.  This will be published and available for sale.

We are participating in the Florida Learn and Serve Fair at Tenoroc High School on April 23.  Two of our students will represent the fifth grade to explain our project and speak to the school board.

Beautification Project

Have you seen the beautification going on around the school lately?  If you are here every other Thursday each month you will see a small group of adults and lots of children with shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows gladly traversing the campus pulling weeds, laying much, and planting flowers to help make Medulla a beautiful spot on Schoolhouse Road.

This handiwork is done by the Medulla Garden Club, which started in the  spring of 2007 under the direction of one our teachers, Ginger Hansill.  This club which meets twice a month  have received excellent instruction from local nurserymen and landscape experts as well as going on a field trip to the STAR Nursery to learn about plant propagation.

In January they began the Backyard Nursery,  a service learning project, where the children are taking care of seedlings to be donated later to schools and Polk County Parks for landscaping.  This project along with others are planned for the remainder of the year and it is going to be a great opportunity for children to learn about the love of gardening first hand.

Take a look at some of the photos that have been taken during Garden Club.
