Teacher of the Year and Employee of the Year

Mr. Kale—Teacher of the Year

It is with great pride that we announce Mr. Kale as the North Lakeland Elementary School Teacher of the Year. As the science lab instructor and resource teacher, Mr. Kale has made it his personal goal to help increase our students’ level of understanding of scientific principles and concepts. He researches FCAT science content to make sure that the skills that are required by 5th grade are learned throughout the elementary experience. He collaborates with teachers regarding ways he can supplement their lessons through the hands-on lab experiments. Students always look forward to going to their science special, because it is truly always “special.” Just the other day, I noticed a lot of noise coming out of the science lab. Upon further investigation, I opened the door to see Mr. Kale playing a trombone in the science lab. When he finished, the students were clapping and smiling…and learning about sound waves! It is also not uncommon this time of year to see students carrying home their Zip Lock baggie full of “flarp” that they made in science. In order to teach about science tools, levers, wedges, forces, and motion, Mr. Kale went home one evening and built a life-size trebuchet to launch soccer balls and water balloons across the PE field as part of the lesson. Talk about student attention! Mr. Kale also takes responsibility for teaching the scientific process and organizing the yearly science fair, making sure we have a school-wide science fair, as well as participate at the district level.

Not only does Mr. Kale have a love for the sciences, but he is also passionate for other things. When Mr. Kale is not teaching students at school, he is either instructing scuba classes and going on diving expeditions or is participating in live Civil War reenactments. He routinely announces battles in the area where staff, parents, or students can take a weekend excursion and enjoy a little historical reenactment. They can cheer on Mr. Kale as he battles for his life against the Union Army. Our school also benefits from this experience, as he sets up camp once a year in our back field and gives students a short history lesson of the Civil War, dressed in complete regalia. This year, he is even working on getting some of his friends to come out for a real-life Civil War battle for our family involvement History night. These are just a few reasons why we are proud to have him as our Teacher of the Year.

Ms. Lemister—Employee of the Year

It is with great pleasure that our nominating committee recommends Ms. Karen Lemister for Polk County’s School-Related Employee of the Year. We are proud to nominate Ms. Karen Lemister as North Lakeland Elementary’s School-Related Employee of the Year for 2012-13. Although she has a bachelors degree in Elementary Education, Ms. Lemister is currently a paraprofessional that has worked hard to get where she is today; and has overcome difficult challenges along the way. Regardless of the situation, she always presents herself in a calm manner. This may seem like a basic level of professional behavior, but her demeanor exudes a complex level of capability and a clear signal to anyone she works with that she is open to any and all ideas of her peers. This is so important to building a collaborative working atmosphere, because it makes her colleagues feel safe to share problems and ideas with her. She is consistently respectful to everyone she works with and is so careful to never hurt the feelings of those around her. She is highly sensitive to the feelings of students, parents, and other teachers. Thoughtful is a word many would choose to describe her because she spends time thinking through what she is going to say and do in regards to educating students and helping her colleagues do the same.
Ms. Lemister is a true professional, performing her job duties with the utmost efficiency. Her involvement and commitment for the betterment of the students and the school in general is quite apparent. She is a great team player and we are honored to select her as NLE’s School-Related Employee of the Year.
