Care and Maintenance of Your PC

This course will help you with the care and maintenance of your personal computer. Topics covered are the general safety of your computer; putting together a tool kit for your computer; good and bad habits while maintaining your computer; an overview of system components; general system cleaning including cleaning the keyboard, system unit, disk drives and drive heads, monitor and mouse as well as other input devices. This course utilizes Course Technology New Perspectives simulations which include CPU Simulator and Troubleshooting. Demonstrations include introduction to the history of the computer, defragmentation, disk operations, using files, Windows directories, folders, and data backup.  Upgrading your computer is not part of this course.

Introduction to Personal Computers

This course is an introduction to personal computers. Topics are covered using Course Technology New Perspectives simulations which include hardware and software concepts, using the keyboard and mouse, demonstration of various popular software applications including word processing programs, spreadsheet programs and database programs.  Demonstrations can also include introduction to file manager and control panel, history of the computer, defragmentation and disk operations, buying a computer, E-Mail, the Internet, World Wide Web and data backup. This course is "hands-on", and all software introduced is used for demonstrating and practicing basic computer skills. Specific software applications are not covered in this course.

Microsoft Windows XP

Introduction to Microsoft Windows XP covers all basic skills necessary to operate in the Windows environment. The Desktop and all menus are explored in detail to provide the maximum familiarity with Windows XP programs. During this instructional time, emphasis is placed on navigating through the Desktop. Topics include: starting Windows; moving and sizing a windows; customizing the taskbar; making and naming folders and sub-folders; moving, copying, renaming, deleting files and folders; and looking at all icons and desktop appearances. This is a "hands-on" course in which every student will have a computer to complete the exercises and use the software. 

Practical Internet

This course is an introduction of the Internet only. It covers information about the term "Information Superhighway" and what it is. You will learn What is the Internet?; Who is on the  internet?; Where is the Internet?; When was the Internet created?; How is the Internet maintained?; and The Internet Today. Emphasis is placed on getting connected to the Internet, who the Internet service providers are, tools of communication including E-mail, news groups, mailing lists, and chat lines. The student will also learn how to explore the Internet using Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer.  Emphasis is also placed on knowledge of Internet terms.

Microsoft Office 2000 (Word)

This is a course designed to introduce the student to word processing using the Microsoft Word for Windows Program. No previous experience with WORD or any other word processing program is necessary, since the basic concepts of word processing will be taught. Topics include creating documents, saving and printing, editing existing documents, and accessing the "help" feature of the program. Both keyboard and mouse procedures for completing tasks will be covered.

Microsoft Office 2000 (Excel)

This course is designed to introduce the student to spreadsheet task using the Microsoft Excel Program. No previous experience with EXCEL or any other spreadsheet program is necessary, since the basic concepts of spreadsheet procedures will be covered. Topics include working in the Windows environment to create, save, print, and revise a worksheet; formatting, copying, and moving data within the worksheet; and creating formulas for spreadsheet calculations.

Microsoft Office 2000 (PowerPoint)

Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint presents basic concepts of creating and modifying presentations using the PowerPoint Program. Students will learn to manage the program interface, create presentations, graphs, and organizational charts. Drawings, clip art, and colors will also be discussed. Using masters and templates as well as preparing and presenting a slide show will be included.

Microsoft Office 2000 (Access)

This course is designed to introduce the student to database management using the Microsoft Access Program. No previous experience with Access or any other database program is necessary, since the basic concepts of database applications will be taught. Topics include creating and managing tables; entering and managing data in tables; customizing the appearance and design of the table; creating a database both manually and using the Database Wizard; adding tables using the Table Wizard; creating and managing queries; using expressions with specific criteria to query records; and using forms to enter and manage data.
