Recent History

The student body of Sikes Elementary School is approximately 900 for the 2009-2010 school year in grades K-5. This diverse population consists of 57% Whites, 15% Blacks, 24% Hispanic and 4% Asian, American Indian and Multi-racial. Approximately 15% of the student population is designated ESE and 40% of the student population receives Free/Reduced breakfast and lunch. The mobility rate for Sikes has remained consistent the past couple of years at less than 10%. Sikes is located in the south end of Lakeland and primarily draws students from S. Lakeland and Mulberry. A few students are bused from a rural community in the Pierce area.

The school focus has continued to center around increasing student achievement and meeting adequate yearly progress in order to build a strong community of support for the students, staff and the lowest performing students. Although Sikes is not a Reading First school, the utilization of a Reading Coach along with the implementation of best practices recommended by the Reading First Program has made a positive impact on reading achievement. In addition, the use of a Reading Resource Teacher to coordinate our Kaplan Spell Read program has also contributed to the success of our reading program. In addition to the Reading Resource teachers, we have added a Math Coach to provide intensive intervention in math to low performing students. Core and supplemental researched based materials are used to guide instruction. Our professional development is centered on increasing teacher knowledge and raising student achievement. During the 2008-2009 school year, we will be implementing the Continuous Improvement Model which is an eight step process that promotes quality instruction, active learning and higher level thinking skills.
