Attendance Policy
Please be aware that Tenoroc High School as an Attendance Policy in place and it can be reviewed by clicking here. We would also like to provide you with which have occurred in Polk County that caused parents to be fined or jailed for not getting their minor children to school.
These cases occurred in Polk County in the last year (2008-2009):
1) Middle school student who was not attending school. His school followed all of the legal steps to assist him in improving his attendance. He continued to have unexcused absences. A school social worker was assigned to work with the family and made many home visits, speaking with the student, his brother and his mother at various times. Finally an Attendance Meeting was scheduled at his school. The student was absent that day and his parent did not attend the meeting even though she had promised the school social worker she would attend. Another visit was made to the home and a letter was left saying that this parent would be prosecuted. The school resource officer took the information and charged the parent with the violation of not having her child attend school. A court date was set and the parent did not attend court. A few days later she ran a stop light and was taken to jail. She remains in jail because of this charge and others. The student was subsequently placed with his father and did not miss another day of school the rest of this school year.
2) A family of 5 children had missed many days of school. The school social worker had been referred after the school completed all of the required steps that come prior to referral. The school social worker made several visits to the home and, although someone could be heard inside the home, no one would come to the door. Subsequently affidavits were filed with the TIPS officer and the case went to the State Attorney’s Office. The parent was served with the time and date of court. She was in attendance and pled guilty to the charge of not having her children in attendance at school. The parent was placed on 6 months adult probation and fined about $400.00. She reported to the Probation Officer monthly and had to pay for his services. From the court date on, all five children (three who were in Elementary school and two who were in Middle School) finished this school year with nearly perfect attendance.
