Math:
Our 8th Grade Math curriculum teaches a wide variety of skills to assist students at their current level of performance and move them forward.  Union Academy 8th Grade Math provides the following 3 courses for students:
Middle School Math 3 (Advanced)
Algebra 1 High School Credit
Algebra 1 (Honors) High School Credit
Placement into one of the "High School Credit" math classes is based on the student's performance in 7th Grade Math 2 (Advanced) and the student's performance on the state standardized tests.

Research
Our 8th Grade Research class is a High School Credit class.  Each student who maintains a "B" Average for both semesters will receive High School credit in Research 1.
Because a high school credit may be earned, expectations are high and the class is demanding.  The class-work involves various classroom, group, and individual projects. With each project the students are given a scoring rubric to follow which outlines all the requirements for the assignments.
Mentoring:
As part of the Research class, each student must go on one mentoring experience each semester as a class requirement.  The students go through a career inventory to determine occupational areas of interest.  Within these areas of interest students must select an occupation to mentor.  Students are given specific tasks to complete before, during, and after their mentoring experience.  A class presentation about their experience is required.  Again, a scoring rubric is given to help guide the students through the process.

Spanish
8th Grade students can take Spanish as a High School Credit class. The class is offered as one of the student's electives and is not part of the core curriculum for 8th grade students. Contact the Guidance Counselor for more information.

Language Arts

8th Grade Language Arts students will be improving their reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and writing proficiency using the educational program,  TeenBiz3000. The programs are based on the research of the National Reading Panel and National Writing Commission and have been proven effective at dramatically increasing students’ reading levels, vocabulary, and writing  Your child has been /will be given a user name and password to access the program. He or she can log on at www.teenbiz3000.com to complete assignments or explore on their own.
